Hospital Clínic and Parc Taulí Take a Step Forward in Leading the Clinical Application of 3D Technology

Pioneering the Future of Healthcare: Hospital Clínic and Parc Taulí Unite to Advance 3D Technology in Medicine

Two leading hospitals in Spain — Hospital Clínic Barcelona and the Parc Taulí Research and Innovation Institute (I3PT) — have signed a groundbreaking collaboration agreement aimed at co-developing innovative projects that harness the power of 3D technology in healthcare. This strategic partnership positions both institutions as national leaders in the clinical application of 3D printing, with a shared vision to create cutting-edge medical solutions that address both present and future biomedical challenges.

A New Era of Collaboration in Clinical 3D Innovation

During the signing ceremony in Sabadell, key figures including Anna Aran (Director of the Parc Taulí Health Corporation), Dr. Josep Maria Campistol (General Director of Hospital Clínic), Lluís Blanch (Scientific Director of I3PT), and Dr. Lluís Donoso (Director of the Clinical Advanced Technologies Institute at Clínic) expressed the significance of this collaboration.

As highlighted by the participants, the agreement will allow both institutions to:

“Combine efforts and create synergies by sharing the knowledge, technology, and know-how of each institution’s 3D labs to develop innovative projects that directly respond to clinical needs and improve patient health outcomes.”

Parc Taulí’s 3D Lab: A Hub of Personalized Healthcare Innovation

Since its foundation in 2015 under the leadership of orthopedic surgeon Dr. Ferran Fillat, Parc Taulí’s 3D Lab has become a strategic pillar for I3PT, supporting research, education, and innovation. The lab has led ambitious projects such as PIT3D and the creation of the medical spin-off Tailor Surgery, focused on personalized surgical planning and custom medical devices.

In 2022, the lab earned its license for custom-made medical device manufacturing, making Parc Taulí only the third hospital in Spain to receive this distinction. Today, the lab continues to collaborate closely with clinicians across departments, providing personalized 3D solutions that have a direct impact on patient care.

Hospital Clínic Barcelona: A Global Leader in Biomedical 3D Innovation

Hospital Clínic has long been recognized for its excellence in biomedical research and patient care. The institution has developed numerous 3D printing applications in medicine, including:

  • Pre-surgical planning and simulation of complex neuroradiology procedures
  • The world’s first 3D-guided endoscopic prostate surgery
  • The first use of high-definition 3D laparoscopy in surgery worldwide

In total, the hospital has carried out eight advanced 3D innovation projects under the guidance of its Biomedical Engineering and Infrastructure Directorate.

A Shared Commitment to Patient-Centered Medical Advancements

This alliance between two of Spain’s most forward-thinking hospitals reflects a broader shift toward personalized and technology-driven medicine. By leveraging 3D printing in clinical settings, the Clínic and Parc Taulí aim to set new standards in surgical precision, treatment customization, and medical innovation.

The future of additive manufacturing in healthcare is here — and these institutions are leading the way.
